Things to see and do in Somerset

If you love to lead an outdoor life, you’re in for a treat with all of Somerset’s stunning natural landscapes. From the Mendip Hills and Exmoor to Cheddar Gorge and the Quantock Hills, you can also enjoy spectacular walks and bike rides along the South West Coast Path. Then there are the beautiful beaches ideal for spending long summer days or even fossil collecting, including Kilve Beach, Berrow Beach and Brean Beach.

The iconic spa waters of Bath are a huge attraction in the area, along with historic landmarks such as Wells Cathedral, Dunster Castle and Glastonbury Tor and Abbey. Pay a visit to the Somerset Rural Life Museum, Haynes International Motor Museum and the Museum of Somerset, and don’t miss Animal Farm Adventure Park or Brean Theme Park if you have children.

Education

When it’s time for your kids to concentrate in the classroom, they can do so at one of Somerset’s many excellent schools. Parkfield Primary and Staplegrove Church School are both in Taunton and rated as outstanding by Ofsted, while Yeovil’s Preston CofE is also in the education board’s top bracket.

Children in Taunton can continue their education at the outstanding Castle School. The Blue School in Wells, Minehead’s West Somerset College and the Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar are also good choices. If you live in Bath, Ralph Allen School is a great secondary to send your kids to after they’ve been to Bathwick St Mary CofE Primary.

Transport links in Somerset

There are decent bus and rail routes in Somerset, although you have to remember that the county is predominantly rural if you’re more used to the frequent transport links of a major city. Having a car is often the best choice of transport for many people, with the M5 motorway starting in the south of the county in Exeter. This runs north past Taunton and Bridgwater, before continuing on to Bristol and Birmingham in the north.

The Somerset property market

Parts of Somerset have seen some fantastic growth in house prices over recent years, including the TA11 7 postcode area. The neighbouring TA11 6 area, meanwhile, presents spots such as Somerton, where you can find traditionally-designed 2, 3 and 4 bedroom new houses with all the mod cons you’d expect of a contemporary home.

Taunton is also well stocked with new homes, including in the Priorswood area on the north east outskirts of town, and in Bishops Lydeard a few miles north west. If you’re looking for a beautiful new houses to call your own, give us a ring today to discuss your requirements; and make sure you ask us about offers such as our Movemaker scheme when you do.
